Both destinations have become significantly more crowded over the past decade. The Amalfi Coast in particular has reached a point of genuine saturation in peak season. Positano: the town you've seen in every Instagram post: is extraordinarily beautiful and extraordinarily difficult to experience with any sense of ease. The roads are some of the most congested in Italy. Finding a moment of stillness in high summer is increasingly rare.

Lake Como has its own crowding issues, particularly in Bellagio during July and August. But the lake's scale offers more breathing room, and its ferry system makes it easier to slip away to quieter towns like Varenna without the logistical battle you'd face on the Amalfi Coast.

This doesn't mean either destination should be crossed off your list. It means when you visit, how you plan, and where you actually stay matters enormously. More on that below.

You don't mind trading a little logistical ease for a lot of atmosphere. This is a strong first-timer destination: it delivers Italy in high definition.

You might love neither: and that's worth knowing too.

The Insider Angle: Where We'd Actually Send You

If you've already done Lake Como and you're ready to go deeper into northern Italy's lake country, we'd steer you toward Lake Maggiore and the town of Stresa. It's less crowded, the food is arguably better, and it still gives you the beauty of an Alpine lake without the traffic. The Borromean Islands just offshore are among the most quietly spectacular places in all of Italy.

If the Amalfi Coast is calling but you want to experience it the way it was meant to be experienced, the answer isn't to skip it. The answer is to plan smarter: stay in a smaller town, avoid the peak weeks of July and August, and build your days around early mornings and late evenings when the light is extraordinary and the crowds are thin. We also love introducing clients to the Cilento Coast to the south: wilder, slower, and almost entirely free of tourist infrastructure.

The principle is one we return to constantly: the 1% of Italy that gets photographed is not the 1% of Italy that will stay with you.

Practical Considerations Before You Decide

Getting Around

Lake Como wins on ease of logistics. The ferry system is reliable and beautiful, and trains from Milan make access simple. The Amalfi Coast requires more planning: buses are crowded, roads are narrow, and unless you hire a private driver (which we strongly recommend), getting from town to town can eat your day.

Best Time to Visit

Both destinations are at their best in late May through June and in September. July and August bring peak crowds and heat to both, but the Amalfi Coast feels the impact more acutely. Lake Como can also be lovely in early October, when the summer visitors have gone and the light turns golden.

Trip Length

Three to four nights works well for Lake Como as a standalone stay, particularly when it's part of a broader northern Italy itinerary. The Amalfi Coast rewards a longer stay: at least four nights, ideally five: to allow for the kind of slow exploration that makes it memorable rather than merely picturesque.

Pairing with Other Destinations

Lake Como pairs naturally with Milan, the Italian Lakes region, and the Dolomites. The Amalfi Coast pairs naturally with Naples, Pompeii, and a broader southern Italy journey through Puglia or Basilicata. Neither destination belongs in the same two-week trip as the other: the north-to-south logistics will exhaust you and shortchange both.
